CertainTeed Roofing in Compton, CA | Van Nuys Roofing Co
We provide independent CertainTeed roofing service across Compton, including Roof Repair – Compton, shingle replacement, and flat roof work on Landmark, Presidential, and Flintlastic systems. What makes our CertainTeed work different here comes down to one thing: we understand how Compton’s older homes actually fail. A leak at the back of the house is rarely one roof. It’s usually two or three roof assemblies tied together over decades of additions. Call (866) 321-6172 for a free estimate.
Why Compton Residents Choose Us for CertainTeed Service
Van Nuys Roofing Co works across seven major roofing material brands. GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning, IKO, Atlas, Tamko, Boral. Most roofers push one. We don’t push any. If your house has CertainTeed shingles and a CertainTeed membrane over the back addition, we service both without trying to sell you a brand switch. Rick Dominguez, our owner, spent the better part of two decades on rooftops across the San Fernando Valley before starting this operation, and he’s known for being straight with people about what actually needs fixing versus what can wait another season. We also offer Carson CertainTeed service for nearby homeowners. Compton homeowners call us because we inspect first and recommend second. If a repair resets the clock for five more years, that’s what we’ll say. If the field is done and a tear-off is the honest answer, we’ll say that too.
We’re not a CertainTeed dealer or contractor tied to the manufacturer. No authorization or warranty endorsement is implied. Our credibility comes from hands-on CertainTeed repairs and re-roofs on Compton’s specific roof assemblies. For more on our CertainTeed work across the region, see our CertainTeed sales & service page.

Common CertainTeed Roofing Problems We Solve in Compton
- Granule loss and cracking on Landmark shingles. Compton’s coastal-influenced basin weather means dry summer heat followed by winter rains. CertainTeed Landmark shingles on older shallow-pitch gables expand and contract through these cycles, and after 15 to 20 years the granules start washing into the gutters. We see this constantly on the 1940s to 1960s tract homes in 90220 and 90221. The shingle isn’t dead yet, but it’s telling you something.
- Seam and penetration failures on Flintlastic low-slope membranes. Flat and low-slope roofs are everywhere in Compton, especially over converted garages and enclosed patios. CertainTeed Flintlastic SA membranes fail at seams and pipe boots first, not in the field. Where an unpermitted addition created a low spot, water ponds, and the first heavy storm after a dry summer sends water through the seam. We re-flash and re-membrane these constantly.
- Brittle tile underlayment under concrete or clay tile. The tile looks fine. The roof leaks anyway. Older Compton homes with tile roofs often have a CertainTeed underlayment beneath the tile that has gone brittle with age. The membrane is what leaks, not the tile. Tile has to come up in sections to replace it. We do that work.
- Valley and flashing failures where shingle fields meet stucco parapets. Compton’s one-story stucco homes have a lot of parapet walls and rear additions that were never detailed to shed water correctly. Where a decade-old CertainTeed shingle field ties into a stucco parapet or a flat rear addition, that transition is the weak point. Water gets behind the flashing and travels before it shows up inside.
- Re-roofing over older organic-mat CertainTeed shingles. Some Compton homes still have the older CertainTeed organic-mat shingles from decades back. These absorb moisture differently than today’s fiberglass mats and degrade faster in wet-dry cycles. When we tear one of these off, there’s often concealed dry rot at the eaves that never showed from the outside.
CertainTeed Service in Compton: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Roof
Compton’s central-corridor homes often tie a permitted CertainTeed shingle main roof into unpermitted rear additions and enclosed patios. A leak call is rarely one roof. It’s two or three assemblies at different pitches that have to be re-detailed together before the next storm. You can’t fix the shingle section and ignore the flat section. Water doesn’t respect property lines, and it doesn’t respect where the permit ended.
After the first real winter storm a couple of seasons back, we got a run of calls off the central corridors where water was streaming through the seams of a CertainTeed Flintlastic flat roof over a converted garage. Our crew opened it up, found an unpermitted low spot that had ponded for years, and re-built the deck pitch before laying new CertainTeed membrane and re-flashing where it tied into the shingle main roof. No more puddle against the fascia that season. That’s the kind of work a generic roofer misses because they only look at the section where the stain showed up inside. We follow the water.

CertainTeed Models & Products We Service in Compton
We work on CertainTeed Landmark architectural shingles, including Landmark PRO and Landmark Premium color lots. We service Presidential Shake and Presidential TL systems. We repair and re-install Flintlastic SA self-adhered modified-bitumen membranes on low-slope and flat sections. And we handle tile underlayment systems beneath existing clay or concrete tile, where the CertainTeed membrane has failed while the tile above it still looks serviceable.
For repairs we use CertainTeed-branded and spec-matched underlayments, membranes, and accessories where the assembly requires it. Matching Landmark and Presidential profiles and color lots matters if you don’t want a repair that looks like a bandage. We stock common CertainTeed accessories for faster Compton turnaround and order the rest directly through our suppliers.

AfterCertainTeed Service Pricing in Compton
CertainTeed roofing service in Compton varies by scope. A targeted leak repair or flashing fix generally runs $400 to $1,200 depending on access and how much of the roof has to be opened up. Re-shingling a section of Landmark on a simple one-story roof usually lands between $3,800 and $7,500. A full tear-off and re-roof with Landmark on a typical 1,200 to 1,500 square foot Compton tract home typically runs $11,000 to $16,000. Flintlastic membrane replacement over a flat addition or converted garage falls between $4,500 and $9,000 depending on deck repairs and re-pitching work.
What drives the cost is what’s under the surface. If we open up a roof and find an unpermitted low spot that needs re-framing, that changes the number. We give written line-item quotes so you see exactly where the money goes. Call (866) 321-6172 to schedule a free estimate, and we’ll walk the roof and tell you what you’re actually dealing with. FAQs – CertainTeed Roofing in Compton
My CertainTeed shingle roof leaks only after the first big winter rain. Why does it seem fine all summer?
Because the leak isn’t in the shingle field. It’s almost always at a transition, a penetration, or a low spot where water ponds. During Compton’s dry summers, those weak points stay dry, and the roof looks fine. The first sustained rain saturates the area and finds the path through. On older CertainTeed roofs here, we find seam failures on flat sections tied into the shingle main roof more often than we find shingle failure itself. Call (866) 321-6172 and we’ll trace it before the next storm.
Can you re-shingle over my existing CertainTeed roof in Compton, or do I need a full tear-off?
In most cases you need a tear-off. Compton’s building code follows California’s reroofing rules, which generally limit you to two layers of roofing. Many of these 1940s and 1960s homes already have two layers from a previous owner. More important, re-shingling over an old layer hides the dry rot and failed flashing we already know is common on these roofs. Tearing off is the only way to see what you’re actually dealing with. We’ll tell you if your roof is an exception.
What’s the difference between CertainTeed Landmark and Presidential, and which fits an older Compton tract home?
Landmark is a dimensional architectural shingle with a standard exposure. Presidential and Presidential TL are heavier, thicker shingles with a layered, more textured look. On a 1950s one-story Compton tract home, Landmark is the practical choice. It matches the roof’s original profile, it’s lighter on older framing, and it’s easier to match if a repair is needed years later. Presidential reads as more of a premium statement, and we’ve installed it on larger and newer homes, but for most of this housing stock, Landmark is the right call. We’ll show you samples and let you decide.
Does my flat or low-slope roof over a converted garage need CertainTeed Flintlastic, or can you just patch it?
It depends on the condition of the existing membrane. If the Flintlastic is under 10 years old and the failure is at a seam or a penetration, a patch is often viable. If it’s older, cracked, or has multiple open seams, you’re better off replacing the membrane rather than chasing leaks patch by patch. And if we find a low spot that’s been ponding, patching won’t fix it. The deck pitch has to be corrected first. Call (866) 321-6172 for an exact assessment. Estimates are free.
My roof has concrete tile. Is the leak in the tile or underneath?
Almost always underneath. Concrete and clay tile shed water well, but the tile is not the waterproof layer. What’s underneath is a membrane, often an older CertainTeed underlayment that has gone brittle. The membrane fails long before the tile does. Fixing it means lifting tile in the affected sections, replacing the underlayment, and re-setting the tile. The tile itself usually goes back on. If you’re seeing water stains on the ceiling with a tile roof, the problem is below the surface.
